Discover the beautiful world of traditional Japanese Sashiko stitching in this creative and mindful workshop with Karen Giroud . Karen is an Edinburgh based former costume designer and maker who has taught art, design and textiles and dressmaking in schools and workshops for over 20 years.
Sashiko started as a practical embroidery technique to reinforce and repair clothing but developed into a beautifully decorative from of expression with endless opportunities for creative play with intricate pattern and colour.
In this workshop, you can create a beautiful Sashiko sampler square on cotton drill that can be made into a coaster or a lavender bag. Learn how to plan and grid out your design onto fabric, how to read and adapt Sashiko patterns, how to master the stitching and weaving techniques as well as how to turn your completed Sashiko into a practical and useful item.
You will learn about the fascinating history behind Sashiko while creating your own designs. Karen Giroud will provide plenty of inspiration and tips and encouragement as you spend a creative and meditative morning stitching. You will leave the workshop excited to apply your new skills.
